우리는 타인에게 보여주기 위해, 혹은 스스로를 보호하기 위해 매일 수많은 외피를 겹겹이 입는다. 구나리 작가의 작업은 이 가공된 표정과 얼굴을 하나씩 걷어내는 집요한 여정에서 시작된다. 그 아래에 남겨진 것은 다듬어지지 않은, 어쩌면 비루하고도 아름다운 영혼의 ‘몸통(Body)’이다.

작가는 내면에 머물러온 이 원초적인 실체들을 화면 속 인물로 옮겨낸다. 인물을 그려나가는 과정에서 화면은 자연스레 신화적인 결을 띠게 된다. 인간의 몸 위로 동물의 형상이 겹쳐지고, 낯선 존재와 작가의 얼굴이 하나로 뒤섞인다. 이 기묘하고도 낯선 도상들은 현실과 상상의 경계에서 변형을 거듭하며, 인간이 스스로를 이해하기 위해 빚어낸 또 하나의 ‘현대적 신화’를 완성한다.

가장 개인적인 심연의 기록에서 출발한 이 전시는, 역설적이게도 우리 모두의 보편적인 이야기로 확장된다. 하나의 고정된 자아에 집착하지 않고 끊임없이 변화하는 스스로를 긍정할 때, 사적인 고백은 세상과 모든 존재를 향한 외경심으로 나아간다. 이번 전시는 관람객 각자의 내면에 웅크리고 있던 영혼의 실체와 대면하고, 계속해서 유동하는 자신을 있는 그대로 껴안는 해방의 시간을 선사할 것이다.

*Body of the Soul ; Laying Bare the Soul’s Body

We layer ourselves each day with countless outer skins—whether to present ourselves to others or to protect what lies within. KU Nari’s practice begins with a persistent journey of peeling away these constructed expressions and fabricated faces, one layer at a time. What remains beneath them is the unrefined, perhaps even abject yet beautiful, “Body” of the soul.

The artist translates these primal entities, long concealed within her inner world, into figures on the canvas. As she brings each figure into being, the image gradually acquires a mythic dimension. Animal forms are superimposed upon human bodies, while unfamiliar beings merge with the artist’s own face. Strange and uncanny, these images undergo continual transformation at the threshold between reality and imagination, ultimately forming a new kind of “contemporary mythology”—one created by human beings in their enduring attempt to understand themselves.

Although the exhibition originates in a deeply personal record of the artist’s innermost depths, it paradoxically expands into a universal narrative shared by us all. When we relinquish our attachment to a singular, fixed identity and affirm the self as something continually changing, private confession begins to open outward into a sense of reverence for the world and for all forms of existence.

This exhibition invites viewers to encounter the substance of the soul that has long lain curled within them, offering a moment of liberation in which they may embrace themselves as they are—fluid, mutable, and forever becoming.
